Will AI replace insurance agents?

Short answer: no — but it is already replacing a large part of what fills an agent's day. What official projections say, which tasks AI takes over, and what stays with the licensed adviser, from building AI for brokers.

What the official projections say

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics, in its Occupational Outlook Handbook, projects that “employment of insurance sales agents is projected to grow 3 percent from 2025 to 2035, about as fast as the average for all occupations”, with about 43,100 openings a year on average over the decade.

The same page names the pressure honestly: “many clients do their own research and purchase insurance online, which reduces demand for an insurance sales agent's services. However, agents will still be needed to help clients understand their options and choose a policy that is right for them.” That is the pattern we see when we build for brokers: the transaction moves to software, the advice does not.

What AI already takes over

The tasks that fill a broker's day without needing their licence are the first to go:

  • Renewal follow-up: reminders sent ahead of each renewal through pre-approved templates, and the answers sorted.
  • Inbox triage: every message classified — a question, a document, a claim, a new need — with the urgent ones first.
  • First drafts: a reply prepared from the client's history, ready for the broker to edit.
  • Opportunity spotting: a new car, a move, a new business mentioned in a chat, flagged instead of forgotten.
  • Record keeping: the CRM updated from the conversation, not re-typed.

What stays with the agent

  • Advice and suitability — which cover fits this client, and why.
  • Responsibility — the licence, and the duty of care that comes with it.
  • The hard moments — a claim after an accident, a refused payout, a dispute.
  • Negotiation and trust — the relationship that makes a client renew for years.

How we design it in BrokerPilot

BrokerPilot, our WhatsApp CRM for insurance brokers, follows that split. Campaigns use templates approved in advance; incoming replies are classified by AI and a reply is drafted; opportunities are detected; the 24-hour WhatsApp window is tracked per client; and the inbox is prioritised. The AI prepares — the broker decides and sends.

That is not caution for its own sake. An agent that sends advice on its own creates a liability the broker carries; an agent that prepares the work gives the broker back the hours to do the part only they can do.

What insurance agents should do now

  1. Move client conversations to a channel you can organise — for most clients today, that is WhatsApp — and keep their history in one CRM.
  2. Hand the follow-up to software: renewals, reminders, document collection.
  3. Keep a person on every message that gives advice or commits the agency.
  4. Spend the time saved where software cannot compete: advice, claims support, relationships.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Will AI replace insurance agents?

Not according to official projections: the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of insurance sales agents to grow 3 percent from 2025 to 2035, about as fast as the average for all occupations. AI is taking over follow-up and administrative work, while advice and responsibility stay with the licensed agent.

  • Which insurance tasks can AI automate?

Renewal reminders, inbox triage, first drafts of replies, spotting cross-selling opportunities in conversations and keeping the CRM up to date.

  • Should an AI send advice to insurance clients on its own?

We do not design it that way: in BrokerPilot the AI drafts and the broker decides and sends, because advice and its liability belong to the licensed agent.
